Amount of time in America -- 2 years I came here in 2014 as a sophomore. My freshmen year was at a Catholic school in New Jersey. Everyone at that school was so nice to me that I felt like they were my family. After I was transferred here, the environment was completely new to me. I loved that the campus was really pretty.
I remembered the first time I went to advisory. It was a sunny day. Everyone seemed so excited to see all theirs friends. Most of the people said hi to me, but I couldn’t really join their conversations because they all had known each other for so long. Unlike the kids at my last school, the students here were more insular. One of the reasons might be because they all had known each other for a long time and it was kind of hard for them to accept a completely new person.
I met a Brazilian girl named Lorena at first. She told me that she transferred here as a freshman and she had felt the same way as I did. Nobody ever listened to her then. She said that now she is really good friends with a lot of people, but she still understood what I felt and she was going to help me. Time flew. After five months, I felt like I had made some really good friends. People here are nice, too, but it seemed like it took longer for me to find my place here than it did at my last school. But I got over it and I feel much more comfortable now.
